What Can Go Wrong with My Car Air Conditioning?

A vehicle’s AC system is comprised of several parts, including:

  • Compressor
  • Condenser
  • Accumulator or drier (depending on the year, make, and model)
  • Expansion valve or orifice tube (depending on the year, make, and model)
  • Evaporator
  • High-pressure lines
  • Low-pressure hoses
  • The control panel inside the vehicle
  • A series of blend doors under the dash
  • Electric AC fan in front of the radiator and condenser
  • Blower motor under the dash
  • Blower motor resistor
  • Wiring, fuses, and relays

Because of the many parts involved in making the AC system work, many things could go wrong. Compressors are the most common air conditioning repairs we see in Hendersonville, NC. When the compressor goes out, a certified AC mechanic must replace the accumulator or drier and the expansion block or orifice tube.

Refrigerant leaks are another common AC repair we see in our shop. Refrigerant is not visible to the naked eye, so it’s nearly impossible to find a leak without adding dye.

In some cases, we might see where the oil mixed with the refrigerant leaves residue on a hose, but you can’t count on that to locate the leak. Instead, we refill the system with refrigerant and a dye. Our auto technician then uses a special light to locate the leak and repair it.

How to Reduce Wear and Tear on My Car Air Conditioning?

You can reduce wear and tear on your vehicle’s air conditioning system by taking certain steps.

When you first get in the vehicle, open the windows and turn the air conditioning system on. Turn the recirculation button off. This will get the hot air out of the vehicle quicker.

During the summer, turn the recirculation button on once you get the initial blast of hot air out of the vehicle. This is because it takes much more to cool hot air.

If the recirculation button is off, the system brings the hot air from outside into the cabin. When you use the button, the air is cooler than the outside air and easier on the system. This way, the car AC doesn’t have to work as hard to cool the air.
